Cengage Announces Cengage Unlimited Author Royalty Framework

By Victoria Robertson on April 2, 2018

Cengage, the education and technology company built for learners, has just announced the Cengage Unlimited author royalty framework, a new framework that students will want to take note of.

This is essentially a structure that allocates royalties based on content used by students, according to a recent press release.

For those unfamiliar with Boston-based, Cengage Unlimited, it is a first-of-its-kind subscription, providing students access to all digital higher-education materials for $120 a semester. This includes over 22,000 products across 70 disciplines and over 675 courses. Students can also obtain free print materials by paying an $8 shipping fee.

Cengage is the largest, US-based provider of these materials, and this new subscription service is innovative and helpful in building student confidence.

So what does this mean for authors?

Every item used earns a percentage of royalties, which is similar to many other online subscription companies. This is a usage-based model that will be rewarding for authors, who can expect their first-quarter of 2019 royalty statements and payments to reflect the sale of all products. In addition, these sales will reflect individual units and Cengage Unlimited.

Cengage will also continue selling products outside of Unlimited and there will be no changes to that royalty framework.

For all Cengage authors, notifications have been sent out electronically and via postal service to ensure that the changes are properly explained.

According to Michael Hansen, CEO of Cengage, “Our industry must change and be contributors to lowering the cost of higher learning. With the introduction of Cengage Unlimited, we are breaking with tradition to offer students complete access to quality learning materials at an affordable price point. Today’s announcement marks an important milestone on our journey and we look forward to working with our authors to reach more students.”

As a student, this is an exciting statement, as high education costs are significantly impacted by such a structure, allowing you to spend less but receive more.

According to Erin Joyner, Senior Vice Present of Higher Education Product Management at Cengage, “Our authors are incredible partners and we appreciate their willingness to work with us to change our business model to one that truly puts students first. In many cases, our authors are also instructors who witness firsthand the challenges students face in securing the best learning materials. This subscription model will disrupt the industry and make affordable access possible for more students.”
