Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Opens Application for Student Council

By Lorena Roberts on May 9, 2018

Perhaps one of the most well-known honor societies, Phi Kappa Phi, is now accepting applications for its 2018-2020 Student Council, according to a recent press release. The council will be selected from Phi Kappa Phi student vice presidents across the country, aiming to best represent the society’s members as a whole.

Every year, 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni are inducted into the oldest and most selective collegiate honor society. The Student Council will give a select few of these members the opportunity to grow their leadership skills, as well as interact and connect with staff at the national office. Two students will be chosen to serve on the Board of Directors.

With over 300 chapters of the honor society nationally (and in the Philippines), membership into Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only. The top ten percent of seniors and graduate students are invited to join the honor society, as well as the top seven and a half percent of juniors.

As a member of Phi Kappa Phi’s Student Council, your job will not only be to communicate with student vice presidents of chapters across the country, but you’ll also be expected to plan and host a leadership conference, which will be held in July 2019.

“Being part of the Council made me feel an important part of my chapter. I made sure to help others feel important and essential as well,” said Ana Lu Ramirez, a 2016-2018 Council of Students member. “I mobilized my chapter and we accomplished events and chapter growth. We hosted a book drive and a member drive. It was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it to all the students.”

In order to serve on Phi Kappa Phi’s Student Council, students must commit to serving through 2020, when Phi Kappa Phi will then select the next Student Council.  Additionally, students who are selected to serve must maintain “student” status at their home institution for at least one full year of their two-year term.

From August 1-4, the Student Council will meet for the first time at their 2018 convention in Minneapolis, MN. Additionally, members of the council are expected to take a leadership role in the Student Leadership Summit, held next July.

If you’re looking for a way to lengthen your resume and get involved in something meaningful, explore the options that Phi Kappa Phi has to offer! Getting to be a part of the council would be a once-in-a-lifetime leadership experience! You will have opportunities to make connections with people who could later influence your career or serve as a mentor for life.

“The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has given me numerous opportunities to expand my horizons outside the academic setting and get engaged in the community services,” said Amreen Mughal, a 2016-2018 Council of Students member. “Council of Students is a platform for me to connect with hundreds of other chapters to learn and effectively share new ideas to fulfill the motto of the Society, ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity.’”
