College Career Center Resources You Should Be Using

By Brittany Loeffler on April 9, 2020

If there is one thing you should be using while in school, it’s your college career center. While you may be focused on passing your classes and learning everything you need to know in order to succeed in your dream job, one thing your college classes won’t teach you is how to get your foot in the door. That is where your college career center comes in. The career center has a variety of resources to help you with your resume, connect with companies in your field, and help you land your very first job out of college.

If you aren’t already taking advantage of these career center resources, it’s a good idea to start now.

Resume Review

When you hear the word “resume,” you probably tense up a little. There are so many unwritten rules about a resume. While there are great guidelines to follow, it comes down to preference in the end. If you aren’t sure if your resume is up to par, go to your college career center and they can review it.

Not only will they be a second set of eyes to check for any spelling mistakes, but they will offer you suggestions on how to format your resume and any experiences that you should include to put you ahead of other candidates.

Mock Interviews

Many people get very nervous when they are called in for an interview. There is an overwhelming formality to the interview process and if it is your first one, you may feel unprepared. The only way to become good at interviews is to practice.

Your college career center offers mock interviews so you can practice and get a feel for what kinds of questions you may be asked. At the end of your mock interview, you’ll receive feedback on what you should change and be more conscious of when you go for your real interview.

Career Fairs

Your college career center will most likely host at least one, if not more, career fairs on campus throughout the semester. They will invite companies, both national and local, to set up a booth so you can introduce yourself and learn more about what they are looking for in either an intern or an employee. This is your time to shop around and see which companies you may want to apply to. It’s also a great way to leave your mark because you can interact with either a hiring manager or someone from HR face to face.

Career Assessment

A lot of college students will begin their first year with an undeclared major. It isn’t uncommon for freshmen not to know what they want to do with their lives after college. If you are struggling to find some direction with what kind of career you’d like to have or would even be good in, the career center can help you. Many career centers have career assessment tests that can provide you with multiple industries and professions that you may excel in based on your personality, desires, and work ethic.

Business Etiquette

When it comes to working in a professional setting, you will need to learn business etiquette. There are certain ways you should send emails, interact with colleagues, and act during an interview or meeting. If you aren’t aware of what business etiquette is and how to abide by it, you can ask your college career center for advice. They will teach you everything from how to dress professionally to working with certain personalities in the office. You’ll be one step ahead of other recent college graduates the more you know about how to behave in the office.

Career Coaching

You know exactly what your dream job is, but you struggle with how you are going to get there. With career coaching, you can create a plan on how to land your dream job. Keep in mind that you might not work in your dream job right after graduation and will probably have to work up to it. That’s where career coaching comes in. The career center will help you create this plan and coach you on how to get to where you want to be.

Valuable Connections

Your college career center has connections all over the world for you to take advantage of. It’s their job to help you find a job after graduation, so they may refer you to some of their connections for internships and jobs. You just have to ask!

Take Advantage of Your College Career Center

A lot of college students think that going to school just means passing classes. That isn’t the case. It’s also about learning how to navigate in the professional world. With help from your college career center, you’ll feel confident when it’s time to apply to jobs and internships.
